N Gopalaswami a former Chief Election Commissioner of India (2006-2009) is a Padma Bhushan awardee (2015) A Gold Medalist Post-graduate in Chemistry(1965) from Delhi University. He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1966 and served for the first 25 years in Gujarat and the next 12 years in Govt of India before joining the Election Commission in 2004 .He was Chief Election Commissioner from June 2006 to April 2009.The Electoral Roll with photos of the Voters was introduced at his initiative. The many state Assembly elections conducted during his tenure, including that of UP (2007) were appreciated for being violence-free, intimidation-free and clean elections where the election laws were implemented without fear or favour.

It was due to his initiative as Secretary in the Department of Culture Govt. Of India that Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram in Tamilnadu and Champaner in Gujarat came to be inscribed in the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites. He was instrumental in getting ‘vedic chanting’ incorporated as one of UNESCO’s World’s Oral Heritage, The National Manuscripts Mission a programme to unearth, and digitize the manuscript wealth of this country was initiated by him.

He is the Chancellor of National Sanskrit University , Tirupati and President of Samskrit Promotion Foundation , Delhi Since August 2020 he is Chairman of Madras Institute of Development Studies ( MIDS) and since November 2021 he is President of VHS that runs an affordable hospital at Chennai.

Dr. P. Perumalsamy was born in a small hamlet near Rajapalayam, Virudhunagar District. He had his schooling in government schools and studied hard and proved his mettle in school studies. He studied B. Sc (Chemistry) at GVN College, Kovilpatti, Tuticorin District and M. Sc (Chemistry) in “The American College” at Madurai. He was always an Outstanding Student and a high Scorer in Board / University exams.

Impressed by his consistent Academic record, he was appointed in his Alma-mater i.e. GVN College, Kovilpatti, Tuticorin as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry.He was awarded Ph.D for his intensive research work done on “An Appraisal of Performance indicators on effective schooling” through Alagappa university, Karaikudi in 2002

He got recruited as District Educational Officer in 1987 through Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. After Occupying Several positions such as Chief Educational Officer, Joint Director in the Education Department, he became the Director of School Education in 2008 and made many reforms in the educational administration and academic fields. 66 Research Projects were facilitated in various topics in the education field. All along in his career in the school education department, his performance was rated many times by his superiors as outstanding. Later, he was elevated and joined as Honourable member of Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission in 2011.
